Description

I was mostly shooting for open cluster IC1311 about half an hour before moonset of a half moon. The transparency this night was excellent and I got some of the edge of the Gamma Cygni nebula (IC1318 ) as a bonus, despite a short integration time of only 24 minutes intended to only capture the open cluster. I resized the image to 66.7% of its original size since the large file size seemed unneeded to show the cluster well.

This dense open cluster is roughly 8,000 parsecs away (using 2018 Gaia parallax data). There are several hundred stars in the cluster.

The "hot pixel" red star to the right of lower center is not a hot pixel, but in fact the long period Mira-type variable V1629 Cyg with a variable period of 460 days during which it dims and brightens by about a magnitude. It is surrounded by a very dusty envelop of ejected matter (probably a lot of carbon) that absorbs most wavelengths shorter than red, and so emitting almost no green and blue light which gives the crazy high saturated red you see here.

Each of the subs was composed of 240 one second exposures live stacked in SharpCap.
