Description

I decided to image IC 1396 before I went outside. However I was not sure exactly what time it would be visible. As it turned out it finally rose above trees in that direction around 2:00 am. The sky looked clear when I went outside but actually it wasn't. I fought with high thin clouds the entire night. My old eyes couldn't see them but my camera sensor definitely could. I tried imaging M13 while waiting for IC 1396 to rise. After taking 12 or 13 images of varying quality but mostly useless I decided to choose a target in another part of the sky. I chose the Butterfly Nebula in Cygnus. After taking around 45 images I could see that IC 1396 was now visible. So switched targets and began imaging it. The sky now appeared more transparent than it had been. I found out that I had wasted my time on the Butterfly Nebula because most of those images were not usable due to clouds. I did manage to get enough usable images of IC 1396. The images weren't great but they were good enough to align, stack, and process. I had hoped that my William Optics ZenithStar 61 had a wide enough field of view to get the entire nebula. I wasn't interested in imaging the Elephant's Trunk. I wanted to get an image of the entire nebulosity complex that the Elephant's Trunk is embedded in. However my scope did not have a wide enough field of view. I only captured a portion of the nebulosity complex. It looks like if I want an image of the entire complex I'm going to have to use a camera and camera lens. It would really be nice to be able to work with a dark, transparent sky for a change. With all of that said please enjoy my most recent image of IC 1396.

Description: I reprocessed this image today. I tried to bring out more of the nebulosity surrounding the Elephant's Trunk Nebula. Right now I like this image better than the original.
