Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major. The galaxy is smaller than our Milky Way, at 60,000 light years in diameter. Its apparent size to us is 7 arc-minutes and it is seen by us as 20 degrees from face-on.

I like the contrast of the small core with the long sprawling spiral arms. The arms are sprinkled with blue star clusters and pink Ha regions. Close examination of the arms reveal Vorontsov-Velyaminov rows in the arms.

The galaxy is similar in appearance to M101 (Pinwheel Galaxy), but this galaxy lies twice as far away.
