Description

The Pelican Nebula is about 1800 light-years from Earth and is an active star-forming region. The starlight energizes clouds of hydrogen gas until they glow at the characteristic deep-red "hydrogen alpha" wavelength, which is what you see here. I was particularly excited to see that I'd gotten an image sharp enough to show off the lanes of cold gas threading through the nebula, they look like dark cracks in this image.

I may not have gotten all the data that I wanted, but some things definitely went right. Better guiding, excellent seeing for Wisconsin, very clear skies. Still want to get RGB for this and maybe a mosaic so it's a little less tightly cropped. I went with shorter exposures deliberately in an attempt to minimize guiding problems.
