Description

Last night I used the Opt Triad filter for the first time. It’s a tri-band narrowband filter, that only lets in H-Alpha, H-Beta and OIII light through. It has a special benefit of making one-shot color cameras effective one some targets in light polluted skies. The H-Alpha band lets in light we perceive as red, and the H-Beta and OIII bands let in light we perceive as a greenish blue. Unlike the common H-Alpha filter, which only enables collection of photons in one of every 4 cells of the RGGB matrix, with this filter all 4 cells collect photons (though maybe not optimally for the GGB guys).

Anyway, here is a one hour (20x3min) exposure of the Eastern half of the Veil nebulae. I used a ZWO ASI183MC camera with gain set at 200. I did a brute force color calibration using Nebulosity’s Automatic Color Balance feature followed by PixInsight’s “green gun” feature called, Subtractive Chromatic Noise Reduction (SCNR) set to 0.6. Consequently, the image has a green cast. In the coming days I plan to use more sophisticated tools to balance the colors.

The nebula appears fainter than it does in many other published images that’s because I need to capture more exposures (at least another hour) and I chose not to push the Histogram to hard to avoid revealing background noise.

Otherwise, despite seeing being poor last night (2/5) details are pretty good.
