NGC 7331 - The Deer Lick Group

This is a unique target that I have been interested in imaging for a little while, the deer lick galaxy group! While capturing this rather small-apparent-size "cluster" of galaxies felt easy to pull off, processing this photo just screams "I need to get a cooled camera!" since the noise was quite tough to fix up.

I might add more data to this object later on, since I feel like I can pull out so much more signal in this image with at least twice as much light collected. Still, an ambitious target that seems to have paid off well!

I also am interested in imaging its apparently neighboring group called "Stephan's Quintet" in the future, but I should look towards darker skies before trying to image them (magnitude range +13-+16ish makes it a huge challenge at home).

Description: Reprocessed entirely to pull out as much of the fainter regions as possible. Less noise reduction tactics used to preserve signal. Better color balance and background sky is handled a bit better. Amp glow is pretty rough, but I don't see it as that much of a detriment.

Description: cropped closer, and revised the object/star color. Background could be better, but I am really happy with this.

Description: Background is mostly neutralized by re-stacking and reprocessing... that edit was then added to the main image as luminance to preserve color balance. Luminance layer was processed as full image, 2x drizzled, then resized by half. Slight noise reduction, gradient reduction, and vibrance tampering done.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
