Description

Description

The Ring Nebula is a planetary nebula about 2,000 light years away in the Lyra constellation.

The image was taken from the city state of Singapore, a white zone area. Generally poor seeing coupled with high levels of light pollution, ambient temperature, and humidity make imaging very challenging.

That being said, M57 has an apparent magnitude of about 8.8 and has reasonably high surface brightness. I have seen it visually in an 8" SCT in Singapore as a faint ring.

The small star in the center of the nebula is a white dwarf, the stellar core remnant of the star that the nebula originated from. The white dwarf's faint luminosity comes from the emission of stored thermal energy; no fusion takes place in a white dwarf.

Acquisition

This was the first light image from a new setup comprising of an EdgeHD 9.25 and a Paramount MyT.

As I could not fit my OAG camera due to space constraints on this imaging train, I was forced to test the MyT's unguided performance. I was pleasantly surprised that I could manage 15s subs with hardly any wasted subs at this focal length (2250mm)! 30s subs resulted in having to discarding 20% due to tracking issues.

The MyT is certainly a step up from my old mounts!
