Description

This object is a faint planetary nebula located 6000 light years away in the southern constellation of Sagittarius, at a declination of -34 degrees. Its apparent diameter is about 1 arc-minute, which corresponds to a diameter of 2 light years.

This object resembles both M57, the Ring Nebula, and NGC 3132, the Eight Burst Planetary Nebula in the following ways:
- Each nebula is viewed from a basically end-on view.
- Each nebula has a bright oval white ring - a torus of ionized gas around the central star.
- Each nebula has a OIII-dominated inner region and the Ha-dominated outer region.
- Each nebula has bi-polar outflows creating secondary lobes, which from our vantage point extend towards and away from us.

It is interesting that the outer edge of the ring of this nebula is crisp from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock and again on the opposite side, from 7 o'clock to 10 o'clock. In between those sections, the outer edge is blurry and the outer lobes protrude out. Some faint structure is seen in the OIII-dominated central region, along with several stars, one of which is likely the progenitor star.

This interesting object has only 1 prior Astrobin entry, which was imaged from the southern hemisphere. This image is not as crisp as I would like because of the low altitude from my location.
