I had planned an Orion imaging session, but when the clouds finally parted around 23:30, Orion was already at 24 degrees altitude and sinking fast. I managed to get an OK tracking with PHD2 and kicked off a session of 120 seconds exposures at 200 gain (ASI294MC) with an Optolong L-eXtreme hoping for the best.

Cloud started to roll in and PHD2 eventually went haywire. I decided to give up on Orion and switch to NGC 1968 that was higher up on towards the east on the other side of the night sky.

I reviewed the 10 exposures and saw that the last three were too dim to be used. It had been cloudy for such a long time that I was desperate for new image data, so I decided to stack the seven images I had while I waited for the data to come in from NGC 1968.

I couldn't believe my eyes when Astro Pixel Processor spat out the result. I quickly popped the stacked result into Pixinsight and wow. Altitude in lower twenties, Bortle 5 condition, barely OK guiding, rolling high clouds and 14 minutes of integration. I was so close to not even bother, but I'm glad I did.

Submitted The date and time when you submitted this image for IOTD/TP consideration.	...
Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
