Description

Close to the center of this image lies the B-type giant star Lamba Centauri located in the constellation of Centaurus which never sets when viewed from southern latitudes. The largest nebula nearby is IC 2944, also known the Running Chicken Nebula due to the bright birdlike shape at its center. The nebula contains dark blobs floating around called Bok globules which are the sites of frequent star formation. Intertwined with the Bok globules is the star cluster Caldwell 100 while another bright star cluster, Caldwell 97 is visible on the far right. Planetary nebula PK294-00.1 is also visible 4 o'clock from IC 2944 / 5 o'clock from Lambda Centauri.

My version of the "Running Chicken" looks more like a "Hiding Chicken", probably due to this particular assignment of narrowband colors. I went with a beige palette so as to match the color theme of eggs and poultry. A thing to note about beige is its naturally low contrast which will require some luminance compensation compared to other more vivid narrowband colors.
