Description

The Pleiades, taken by Caroline Baccus. The Pleiades is one of the closest star clusters to earth, at only 444 light years away. At a magnitude of 1.6, it is one of the brightest objects in the night sky, made up of hot, blue stars. In addition to these young stars, the cluster also contains many brown dwarfs, smaller stars not massive enough to sustain nuclear fusion. The proximity of the Pleiades to Earth provides an opportunity for astronomers to study these smaller stars.
