Description

My first reflection nebula and the 2nd image I got from our dark site.  Man this was a bugger bear to process, I took this image Saturday night and just now getting it where I wanted.  Still not sure I have it processed correctly, but I am going to just go with it.  This is an LRGB capture.  On a tip from one of our club members, I stacked and processed the RGB image and Luminance image separately, then layered the Luminance image onto the RGB.

M78 is a cloud of interstellar dust which is illuminated by nearby stars.  M78 is part of the Orion complex and is about 1,600 light years away.  Infrared investigations have found a cluster of 192 young stars.  M78 also includes around 17 Herbig-Haro objects, which are jets of matter ejected from young stars that are embedded in the nebulosity.
