Description

Tarantula Nebula
NGC2070

The Tarantula Nebula situated within the dwarf galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, resides 160,000 light years from Earth.  To put into perspective, the distance from Earth to the black hole at the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way, is 26,000 light years and so its over 6x that distance.
The Tarantula Nebula is so luminous and expansive at almost 2000 light years across, if it were in our own galaxy where the Orion Nebula is, it would cast shadows on the surface of Earth.
