Description

Floating north of  the main body of Cygnus the Swan is a stellar nursery of sizeable proportions known colloquially as the Cocoon Nebula. Spanning some 15 light years from a distance of ~ 2500 light years, the Cocoon is both an emission and reflection nebula, meaning it generates its own light in some sections, while reflecting embedded starlight in others. Dense molecular clouds of gas and dust are accreting to form infant stars and possible 'proplyds', proto-planetary discs that, given time, could become solar systems similar to our own - stay tuned (for millions of years!)
