Description

The Fireworks Galaxy is an intermediate spiral galaxy about one third the size of the Milky Way. The galaxy lies in the constellation Cepheus & Cygnus at a distance of 22.5 million light-years away and has a diameter of about 40,000 light-years. Called the Fireworks Galaxy because of all the supernovae that occur (10 observed in the last 100 years), this photo contains the most recent observed supernova, SN 2017eaw.



Taken over several nights from July 23 to Aug 1, 2017 from Campbell, CA, USA. Sky: 18.80 mag/arcsec^2
