Description

This pair of magnitude 13 spiral galaxies is located 220 million light years away in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +20 degrees.

NGC 5857, on the right, is a Seyfert galaxy which spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.  The beautiful barred galaxy NGC 5859 is much larger at 170,000 light years.

Although the data shows these galaxies to be close to each other, little disturbance is seen.  Both galaxies have wonderful arm structures, especially in their inner regions.  NGC 5859 has a nice pseudo-ring around the outside disk.
