Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as the NGC 7783 chain, is a galaxy chain located in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of 0 degrees.  In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Chains of Galaxies.

The brightest galaxy at image center is NGC 7783, located 360 million light years away  A stellar bridge connects this galaxy with LEDA 72808, immediately to its right.  This pair of galaxies appear to be interacting.  A Milky Way star is superimposed in front of and in-between the pair.  Each galaxy spans almost 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

The small galaxy to the right (LEDA 72810) is part of the galaxy group, at the same distance away.  But the galaxy to the left (LEDA 72806) is twice as far away and is not part of the group.

All 4 of these galaxies make up the Hickson 98 group.
