Description

I've shot this several times. It's a big object and had lots of interesting bits so it's good for many focal lengths. This was shot with a Newtonian reflector at about 713mm focal length with narrowband filters (H-alpha and Oxygen 3) for the nebula and RGB filters for the stars.

The area around the bright star 52 Cyg is called the "Witches Broom". In the left a bit below the middle is Pickering's Triangle. The whole thing (NGC6960) is much bigger than this image and only a portion of the larger supernova remnant structure. It was formed between 10k and 20k years ago when a star 20x the size of our Sun about 2600 light years away from us exploded and has expanded to a diameter of 130 light years today. It is expanding at a rate of almost 1 million miles per hour!!
