Description

LDN 1251 is a low mass molecular cloud of dark nebula located in Cepheus. It's also known as the Rotten Fish Nebula. It's about 1,000 light-years away from earth and is part of a complex of dark nebulae in the Cepheus region.

LDN 1251 is a dusty molecular cloud where stars are forming,  drifting above the plane of our Milky Way galaxy.  It's one of those objects that are not commonly photographed as the nebula is quite faint, illuminated by the glow of the milky way.  I feel like it creates a lovely field of view.  This image is 15 hours of data.  I'll be trying to double that during September if we get a couple of clear nights.

A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust within our galaxy.  A star cluster is a collection of stars, mostly within our galaxy.  Galaxies are distant - outside of our home galaxy, and millions of light-years away.  Can you see the two galaxies that are in this image?  Very distant.

This image can be purchased as a print or on a number of merchandise items here.

I do hope you enjoy this.
