Description

Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy is the direct sister of our Milky Way. It contains slightly more stars than our galaxy, but is very similar to us in shape and galaxy type.

We, the 59ers, wanted to capture the beauty of this galaxy. So we set out to collect as much light of our neighbor as the weather would allow. Not only pure color images were taken, but also narrow band images in the Halpha wavelength to show the many star forming regions 2.5 million light years away. Faint hints of the Andromeda clouds are also visible. The galaxy's halo shows its full 120,000 light-year extent, making it the largest representative of the local galaxy group.
