Description

The California Nebula (NGC 1499) was discovered in 1884 by Barnard, a famous American astronomer. So named because it resembles to some the shoreline of the West Coast of the United States, this neubla is about 1200 light years from Earth. All this red hydrogen gas is excited by a single star Xi Persei which is a blue giant star with a mass 30 times that of our sun....but with a luminosity almost 13000 times brighter than our Sun and if you include ultraviolet light it is then 263,000 times more luminous than the sun!

Barnard lived in Tennessee and actually started as a photographer with an astronomy interest! A wealthy philanthropist at the time from NY was offering 200 dollars for the discovery of each new comet. Barnard discovered 5 in short order and used the money to buy himself and his wife a house., launching his astronomy career. He went on to discover 15 comets in total throughout his life as well as many other more famous astronomical discoveries. He received a fellowship to Vanderbilt in Tennessee but never graduated. He did later receive an honorary degree and to this day, his honorary degree from Vanderbilt is the only one they have ever awarded......
