Description

Messier 1, the Crab Nebula, was created in 1054 by a supernova explosion. Word is that the resulting conflagration was visible during the daytime for three weeks, and at night for nearly 2 years. The date is remarkable too, July 4th, that would have been some fireworks show!

This Crab is about 7000 light years away. Aside from the usual hydrogen in red, and oxygen in green, the Crab also emits synchrotron radiation, which is producing by fast moving and thus high-energy electrons that are forced into curved lines in a strong magnetic field. This results in the visible in a continuum of blue emission.

This image was taken over a horrible winter, with hazy skies and poor seeing, so I was pleased to get anything at all decent out of this image (on the plus side, I have had plenty of time to optimize the image processing). Got to look on the Brightside (or is it Darkside?).

Clear skies.
