Description

The Bode's Galaxy / Messier 81 (also known as NGC 3031) is a spiral galaxy about 12 million light-years away from us, it was discovered by Johann Elert Bode on 31 December 1774. It is estimated that M81 contains approximately 250 billion stars 😲😲

The Cigar Galaxy (known also as M 82 or NGC 3034) is an active galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major; it is about 12 million light years away and is associated with the larger and more famous M81. It is an excellent example of a starburst galaxy. Charles Messier described this galaxy as a nebulous object unsolvable in stars, close to M81 and with a very elongated shape; it was also observed by Johann Elert Bode in 1774 and by Pierre Méchain in 1779.

It was later re-observed by John Herschel, who described it as a sort of luminous "ray" with a composition that he could not know.

Lord Rosse was impressed by this object, describing it in enthusiastic terms as a cloud criss-crossed by several dark bands. Towards the end of the 19th century it was photographed for the first time and was described as an object seen through a slit.
