Description

First attempt at this Southern latitude target - NGC 4038.  Several December nights were used to gather RGB light frames using a relatively small aperture refractor (92mm) equipped with a field flattener and fitted with an APS-C ZWO cooled astrophotography camera (ASI 2600 MM) creating an image scale of approximately 1.2.   Two interacting galaxies are roughly at the center with a tail from each extending from the center and looking like the antennae of an insect.   I will augment the roughly 200 light frames across R, G, and B, with roughly the same amount and re-process - when the opportunity presents.  I will also plan to use a longer telescope with a smaller image scale to try to capture more clarity in the galaxies and bring out the dust spirals.  This set of imaging opportunities really served as a test for the Rainbow 135E mount and the image train.  My expectations for being able to get good imagery of the target between 15 and 32 degrees altitude to the South (and in Bortle 7 skies)  were pretty low.  Having said that, the target is clearly recognizable.    The image was cropped to zoom in on the small target, yet preserve some of the other features in the original frame - placing the target a little off-center.
