Cocoon Nebula/ IC 5146

There were literally zero clear nights here in Flagstaff between July 8th, (when I captured a little over two hours on this object), and this last week when I managed to capture another ~24 hours in four nights. At least I managed to squeeze in a three week motorcycle tour of the California Lost Coast, Oregon Coast, Ranier/St. Helens and Great Basin National Park in the meantime. It's ironic that the Pacific Northwest rainforests were clear, dry and hot, and the Arizona mountains were flooding daily.

Anyway, one of the downsides to long gaps in astrophotography for me at this point is trying to remember how to process images in Pixinsight. I got a little stuck today, but, per my usual processing workflow, I got a good result. Someday I hope to be able to process consistently with confidence. For now, every time is an adventure.

Description: I've really been trying to figure out what I am not liking about the processing I've done on this image...

I reviewed some others work of deeper images of this object, and I think I have been struggling with a greenish cast.

I made a few adjustments, and also tried to bring out the Ha band that is much more prevalent in images that integrate narrowband into them. I won't be able to get that as well as a filtered cam would, but I have a good trick to help augment it a little.

I feel a little silly posting so many revisions.

Description: I really was not happy with the processing iterations on my first go-round with this.

Utilizing a bunch of new tips and tricks, I reprocessed from the PI integration.

This one is far less "over-cooked" with better stars, color, details, etc. than my first try, I think.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
