Description

Cygnus is rising around midnight here so I've started to turn my attention that direction. This was my first non-galaxy image with the C8 SCT and it was a ton of fun. Underlying data was really nice and processed quite cleanly.

Preprocessing

* Calibration using WBPP

* SubframeSelector

* StarAlignment

* ImageIntegration

* Drizzle (2x, vark 1.5, dropshrink 0.7)

Ha & Oiii Channel

* DynamicCrop

* DBE

* Oiii was linear fit to Ha

* IntegerResample (downsample x2 to restore them to original pre-drizzle resolution)

* Channel combination w/ Ha/Oiii/Oiii to create RGB image.

L Channel

A synthetic luminance channel was created by averaging the cropped, DBE'd, and linear fit Ha and Oiii channels using PixelMath (`avg(Ha, Oiii)`)

* Deconvolution

* MultiscaleMedianTransform for additional sharpening and some small scale noise reduction

* IntegerResample (downsample x2 to restore them to original pre-drizzle resolution)

R/G/B Channels

RGB Image

* PhotometricColorCalibration

* ChannelCombination (L*a*b mode with processed L channel)

* HistogramTransformation (x2)

* StarNet to create a starless version + stars only image

* ExponentialTransform to boost nebula

* PixelMath to re-add stars (`starless + stars_only`)

* MorphologicalTransformation for star reduction (contours mask, morphological selection @ 0.15, 2 iterations)

* Extracted L channel and ran NoiseGenerator on the contour mask to smooth noise profile

* ChannelCombination with adjusted L

* MultiscaleLinearTransformation (x2) for noise reduction (inverted L mask)

* UnsharpMask for slight recovery of sharpness lost in NR (with inverted L mask - stars)

* LocalHistogramEqualization

* CurvesTransformation (x100000 for color, contrast, and other tweaks)

* To boost Oiii, I did some multiscale processing of that channel

* See [Rogelio Bernal Andreo's tutorial](http://www.deepskycolors.com/art/366681) for info.

* Extracted G & B channel and recreated a synth Oiii using PixelMath (`avg(G, B)`)

* Used MMT to extract large scale structures by removing all but layers 8 and R

* Create an image with small scale structures only using PixelMath (`orig - large_scale`)

* Boost large scale structures with a more aggressive ExponentialTransformation

* Recombine with small scale using PixelMath (`large_scale + small_scale`)

* ChannelCombination to combine with boosted Oiii (B = Oiii, G = Oiii)

* CurvesTransformation for final adjustments
