Description

NGC 278 is a small bright spiral galaxy in Cassiopeia.

The interesting thing about NGC 278 is that it has a high rate of star formation which occurs in an inner ring. Such rings are seen almost exclusively in barred galaxies, but NGC 278 is a unbarred galaxy. Dusty outer regions of the galaxy are relatively dark. It is thought that the unusual structure is caused by a merger with a smaller gas-rich galaxy.

Brightness is 10.8m. Distance is about 40 million light years. Apparent size is about 2 arcmin.

The image has been taken during 3 nights and consists of 316x1 minute unguided exposures.

The seeing conditions varied, so I was able to use only about 60% of captured frames.

The re-processed revisions C and D use 423 light frames. PixInsight WBPP script used the Cluster preset.

Description: Reprocessed the old stacked image using the latest variant of my PixInsight workflow. It turned out to be quite difficult, because the data was much worse than the recent images. Fortunately the galaxy is very bright, so it was possible to make the background darker in order to hide the color blobs and gradients.

C

Description: I was able to find darks and flats for the light frames. So they have been calibrated and integrated again in PixInsight. I think that the resulting image shows more details than the original revision. Comparing to the NGC278 Hubble image, most features of the galaxy can be recognized :)

E

Description: The galaxy looks like a flower at this position angle to me. Less sharpening. A bit more color saturation.
