Description

Really wanted to image the other night I guess. The Moon was out and it was cloudy so I picked a bright star cluster. Several of these subs were shot through the clouds and the Moon was shining brightly in the southern sky. This is 120X60sec subs at ISO 800 shot with the Canon T3 and AT65EDQ. I used Custom White Balance (White Paper) on this one.

The Double Cluster in Perseus is also known as NGC 869/884 and Caldwell 14. The clusters both lie at a distance of about 7500 light years. Both clusters are relatively young at 12.8 million years old. In comparison, the Pleiades star cluster (M45), have an estimated age ranging from 75 to 150 million years old.

In the early 19th century, William Herschel was the first to recognize the object as two separate clusters. The Double Cluster is circumpolar (continuously above the horizon) for most northern latitudes. It is in close proximity to the constellation Cassiopeia and is approximately the radiant of the Perseid meteor shower which peaks annually around August 12th or 13th.
