Description

This object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 170 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +15 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Spiral Galaxies with High Surface Brightness Companions on Arms.

The larger left galaxy is NGC 3800. This magnitude 14 galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years. The disk structure and color is somewhat disturbed. I like the blue star-clustered upper arm. It appears that a star stream bridge connects this galaxy with its companion.

The smaller companion galaxy is NGC 3799. This magnitude 15 galaxy spans 0.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 40,000 light years. Data shows these two galaxies to be at the same distance. The structure and color in this galaxy is remarkable for such a small object. The structure is very symmetric, with the exception of a stronger star stream on the left side.
