Description

This object, nicknamed the Nautilus Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy (NGC 772) and companion (NGC 770) located 120 million light years away in the constellation of Aries at a declination of +19 degrees. Measuring from the outermost star stream extent, this galaxy spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual width of 250,000 light years. This is an unusually large width, twice that of the Milky Way.

The Nautilus galaxy is named after its resemblance to a nautilus seashell, which has an asymmetric spiral cross-sectional shape. The asymmetry is caused by interaction with the dwarf elliptical galaxy just to its lower right, whose gravitational forces on the larger galaxy have likely caused the emergence of a single elongated outer spiral arm that is much more developed than the other arms. Note the bluish tint of this longer arm and the large knots of gas and dust along the arm. This arm displays the straight segments characteristic of Vorontsov-Velyaminov rows.

My favorite part of this image is the faint star streams, both encircling the main galaxy as well as running to and through the companion.

Many smaller background galaxies are also visible in this image, some nearby this pair. I could not determine if any of these small galaxies are in the same vicinity.
