Description

NGC 3256 is a mag 11.4 peculiar galaxy formed from the collision of two separate galaxies in the constellation of Vela. The telltale signs of the collision are two extended luminous tails swirling out from the galaxy.  The system hides a double nucleus and a tangle of dust lanes in the central region.

Several other interesting galaxies appear in the field, the most noticeable of which is the tidally disrupted mag 11.9 barred spiral galaxy NGC 3263 towards the bottom left of the image.
