Description

M82 is the archetypical "Grand Design" galaxy and you cannot get this one wrong from the mid-northern latitudes. It rides high in the sky and peaks in mid-winter so plenty of dark skies to deal with the crummy weather. Given its brightness it is also a rather quick affair (compared to others in the Messier list) and its size make it a catchy subject, that is "Grand Design" for you.

In the picture the H-alpha subs went int the R channel not in the luminance so the "high-lightening" of the HII regions is not as easily visible.
