Description

NGC5866 is a lenticular (or maybe spiral) galaxy seen almost exactly edge-on. It has, in the past and around its discovery, been mislabeled numerous times. It is still not certain if this object really is what Messier meant as he put it into his catalogue as M102: A galaxy discovered by Méchain in 1781. Méchain's original location had a typo giving a 40-degree area in the sky. He later wrote it off as a double entry of M101. William Herschel described it independently in 1788, and John Herschel misrepresented the "H" catalogue number. If you correct Méchain's typo, M102 is very probably NGC 5866, as it conforms to Herschel's description and is the brighter object in this part of the sky.

When I saw the first few images of M102, I found it very similar to M104, and I was quite surprised when I discovered the rather luminous halo around the central bulge. It was not easy to make both the dust band and the halo visible, and it would have benefitted from more data - which is difficult to get here withou astronomical night currently.

I am very satisfied with how the CFF RC performs. I still have some slight fine-tuning to do for the corrector distance, but I am at 1.8" FWHM at the center, and 2.1" at the corners (where I can still see an elongation of the stars), both way better than any of my previous instruments. The additional spikes are from the secondary heater, whose cable I need to attach properly. I am waiting for a 3D-printed holder for that.
