Description

Stars are forming in the Linz Dark Nebula (LDN) 1251. This dusty molecular cloud is about 1,000 light-years away, floating above the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, and is part of a complex dark nebula that has been mapped to the Cepheus flare region. Across the spectrum, astronomical explorations of obscure interstellar clouds reveal energy shocks and outflows associated with newborn stars, including the dark red glow of scattered Herbig-Haro objects visible in this sharp image. Distant background galaxies also lurk in this scene, visually hidden behind the dusty expanse. The deep telescopic view, taken with a broadband filter, covers approximately two full moons of the sky, at the estimated distance of LDN 1251, which is 17 light-years.
