Description

After enduring a frigid (-7 C) observing session at my dark site last wekend, it was nice to image from my back yard during the daytime. It was 25 C outside in the Bay Area!

This solar image was taken with my 40 mm diameter solar scope. It is only a single stack, and the band pass is ~1.0 A. Hence, the resolution and contrast in the chromosphere are not as refined as what could be achieved with higher end equipment. Even with these limitations, this was my best solar image to date. Two different exposures were overlaid to display the both the chromosphere and prominences in one composite image.

It is too bad we're at a minimum in the solar cycle right now. I suspect we will gradually get more interesting opportunities for imaging over the next few years as solar activity increases.
