Description

NGC 6818 (aka The Little Gem Nebula) is very little indeed, with an oval diameter of only 15 to 22 arcseconds.  It is also very bright, making this magnitude 9.5 planetary nebula a favourite target for visual observers. 

Astrographically speaking, it is usually spotted as a small blue-green dot in widefield photos of Barnard's Galaxy (NGC 6822), which lies less than 1 degree away to the South.  But of course this "object" is not so little after all, measuring around half a light year across, roughly 1000 times the distance from Earth to Pluto.  So here, we zoom in for a closer look...
