Description

This image was created by using a near IR image for luminance in an LRGB combine.  It wasn't my plan to shoot this, as my goal was to get Jupiter while it was still well placed in the evening sky.  But the seeing wasn't good enough for planetary imaging, so I slewed over to the Orion Nebula and took 30 unguided 5 second exposures through each filter through the Huntington Beach light pollution.  Many frames were rejected in processing due to trailed stars, so the total exposure time is only 7 minutes and 15 seconds, a mere snapshot by deep sky imaging standards.  This came out better than I expected - the near IR captured numerous stars that are not visible at visual wavelengths, so this view of M42 is unique and not what you could see visually in any telescope.
