Description

Pickering's Triangle is a remarkable feature in the greater Veil Nebula, and like the nebula, it emits in the Ha, SII and OIII wavelengths.  The most common images made by astrophotographers are a combination of Ha and OIII, which are truly beautiful with the typical red and blue hues assigned to them.  However, there is a strong SII emission I thought would be interesting to include.  I gathered  6hrs of Ha,  5Hrs of OIII and 4.2 hrs of SII.  In combining the images for each filter I assigned the Ha to red and OIII to Blue.  The SII is green but added only where it was lighter than the red or blue resulting in the yellow hues.  So yellow is where the strongest SII emissions are located.  It makes for a fiery looking image with the reds and yellows dominating some areas.

Image comparisons between 1995 and 2015 from the Hubble Space Telescope show the Veil is expanding at about 932,000 miles per hour.  This image shows how the different gases are expanding at different rates as there is clearly a difference in locations concentrated with Hydrogen shown in red vs. Oxygen shown in blue and a combination of Sulfur and Hydrogen in yellow.  During the supernova event that propelled the gases out from the star, each gas may have been propelled out at a slightly different rate due to mass and/or size.  Whatever the cause, over the time since the supernova event, there has been a separation due to slighltly differing velocities of the gases.
