Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is an edge-on spiral galaxy located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -20 degrees.  It is a magnitude 13 galaxy which spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years (not including the extended star stream).

This galaxy, although small and distant, presents some interesting details.  The small yellow core is flanked by faint dust lanes and blue star forming regions.  The most interesting part is the long faint star stream which extends left and curls downward, longer in overall length than the galaxy itself.

The disturbance here has puzzled scientists because there are no companions nearby.  The galaxy seen at left is much further away.
