Description

Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF.  This image was guided on the comet head, causing the comet to be in focus, but causing the stars to trail as the comet moved over the 2 hours. The images which were assembled into this picture were taken over a 2 hour period from 2/15/23 9:15pm to 11:26pm.

In order to get the star trails, the normal Data Rejection processing was not done.  Instead only hot and cold pixels were rejected.  This allowed the star trails to remain, but also left a few artifacts.  If you look around the picture, you will occasionally see pixels (small dots) which are red, blue, or green.  Those are the result of cosmic rays which struck the color sensor during one of the exposures, and since each pixel in a color camera had either red, green, or blue filter over it, the cosmic ray hit will show as that color.  It does show that we are constantly bombarded with cosmic rays from space!

Comet images were captures with an Esprit80mm/flattener using a QHY183C camera running at -30s.  24x300s exposures.
Guiding was on comet's head.
