Description

I have to admit, I looked at Johny's (now deserved IOTD: https://www.astrobin.com/g28h8f) image and thought: that would be a great target to see if RGB imaging in my backyard is worth the while, knowing that I will not be able to get this as good as Johny did. I also needed to get into the "mood" of processing LRGB galaxy images, which is quite different from narrow band processing.

All in all, I believe I learned a lot processing this quite difficult triplet of main galaxies. I fiddled a lot around in how to get the color nicely into the image, using a significant amount of Lum data which usually washes out the colors. I believe I found the right balance. Brighter stars are always a bigger challenge for galaxy images since one wants to bring out the most of them, blowing out the bigger stars. I decided not to manipulate them to get them reduced, they made actually a nice addition to the overall image.

Some eccentricity values for my records:

L: e=0.55; R: e=0.42; G:e=0.39; B:e=0.30

Description: I tried to find all the galaxies in my image, using Carte Du Ciel and map them accordingly (visual plate solving, yikes 😊. Does anybody know how to do this easier via a Plate Solving engine?). These are the ones that I found, maybe I missed some, but was nice to see that I could get down to 18.5 mag for a decently sized one.

Description: And while I tried to Plate Solve my image via Astrometry.net I saw that it actually provides images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, that was cool to see. And I must say: my brighter stars look nicer LOLOL. Well ... that is it though 😊. The details in this image are quite extraordinary.

Description: Tim told me how to do that in PI, and it worked wonderfully, thanks so much Tim! Here the PI version of the annotated image, I missed a couple, but had also a couple more (maybe just wishful thinking on my side 😊).
