First attempt at a classic target. I intentionally chose subtle colors. Photo was captured in my backyard, under Bortle 5 skies, using my TS CF 80 APO, AAP, ASI 533 MC Pro, APM 50mm Guidescope, ASI 120mm Mini and my HEQ5 Pro mount.

Processed with DSS, Siril, Graxpert, Gimp, and fine-tuned with Topaz Studio.

The Horsehead Nebula, a famous dark marking in the sky, is also known as Barnard 33. In this sharp cosmic landscape, it stands out against the background glow of emission nebulae. The Horsehead is approximately five light-years "wide" and is located 1500 light-years away in the constellation Orion. The extension of opaque dust in the fertile molecular cloud complex of the region happens to have a recognizable shape from our perspective in the Milky Way.

I try to further perfect the collected data. What I don't like so much are the star colors that I can still work on to bring out better, as well as the fact that even after so many hours, i can't represent the Ha emissions in much detail. I believe the problem is due to the object's low altitude above the horizon and the ligth pollution in my area.

I have meanwhile purchased a Duo Narrowband filter and hope to extract a few more details with it.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
