Description

Discovered in 1745, catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764 as Messier 17, this is another star-rich target being in Sagittarius looking towards the middle of the Milky Way.

John Herschel published his drawing of M17 in 1833, describing it as a Horseshoe resembling the Greek letter, Omega.  I can also see a swan in the middle of it - hence some refer to it as the Swan Nebula. It is also known as the Lobster Nebula and the Checkmark Nebula....it has five names I think I can see them all if I use my imagination.
