Description

Here are three galaxies and a planetary nebula in one frame. NGC 4725 is the largest galaxy in this picture, spanning 100,000 light years wide and approximately 41 million light years from us. It accompanied by galaxies NGC 4712 and NGC 4747. Lotr5 is the planetary nebula (stands for Longmore-Tritton 5, not Lord of the Rings…) and it is one of the largest planetary nebula known, with a diameter of almost 4 light years. The central star of this nebula is actually a binary star system where two stars are orbiting each other, making it also a variable star.

This was a difficult one for us to process. These targets are a little small for our tiny refractor telescope, plus we use a color cam. We captured broadband data for the galaxies and narrowband data for the nebula which we then combined to attempt to get the best of both worlds. Having a color camera does have its limitations, but we’re happy with the result.
