Description

The Horsehead Nebula (IC484) and Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) in Orion. Captured in narrowband and processed as HSO.

These nebulae are located around Alnitak, the left most star in Orion's Belt, around 1,000 light-years from Earth.

The Flame Nebula is illuminated by Altinak in UV. This causes ionisation of the clouds of gas that emit visible light on recombination. There is a cluster of newly formed stars at the centre of the Flame.

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula within a star forming region.

Alnitak and the ASI1600mm!!! A large halo on the Oiii filter and micro-lensing effects on all filters made for some tricky processing. The halo was removed by masking the halo (GAME mask) and using PixelMath to subtract the halo intensity from the affected region. The microlensing artifacts were more tricky to remove. I masked the centre of Altinak and used CloneStamp as best I could.
