Description

Unfortunately, in this strange universe of ours, Arp 89 is best known as a dance track by Olvo. Please do yourself a favor and do not Google it - that will be 3 minutes of your life that you will never get back.

Arp 89 should be better known as a fantastic interacting pair of galaxies located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Cancer at a declination of +14 degrees. The pair spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual width of 150,000 light years. Arp classified it as a spiral galaxy with a large, high surface brightness companion.

The galaxy on the right is the grand spiral NGC 2648. Its companion on the left is the edge-on spiral galaxy MCG+02-22-006. I love so many things about this object:

1. The connecting star streams are my favorite part of this object.

2. I am fascinated by the color contrast of the two galaxies. NGC 2648 is distinctive for its almost uniform yellow color.

3. NGC 2648 looks like it is not barred, yet it appears to have an almost complete inner ring as well as two long arms which spiral out for at least 180 degrees,

4. The companion has an interesting S-shaped disturbance on the left side of the galaxy disk, indicating significant disturbance. The main galaxy does not show any disturbance in its disk, only in the outer star streams.

5. The background detail intrigues me. I counted more background galaxies than foreground stars.
