Description

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396) located in the constellation Cepheus is about 2,400 light-years away. Its a big complex of interstellar dust covering an apparent width of about 10 full moons. The trunk itself is about 20 light-years long.

The pockets of dust are the raw materials for star formation, so this is one of many star nurseries. Two stars can be seen in the small cavity at the end of the trunk. Its possible that stellar winds from these two stars blew away the nearby dust creating the cavity.

The image was processed in the Hubble (SHO) palette with RGB stars.
