Description

M37 is an open cluster located 4700 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of 32 degrees.  It is a magnitude 5.6 cluster which spans 19 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 26 light years.

This open star cluster contains more than 500 stars. M37 is the most spectacular of the three open clusters in Auriga, with a contrast of sights including a brilliant orange star in the center, many young blue stars, and a high number of red giants.

M37 is called the Salt and Pepper Cluster.  I don't find that to be a particularly appropriate or appealing nickname, although I know that almost all nicknames originated from their look in the eyepiece and not in an image such as this one.
