Description

M31 Andromeda Galaxy - 2020 version.

13.5 hours in total integration, combining 7 hours of RGB and 6.5 hours of Ha+Oiii through STC Duo Narrowband Filter. ASI294MC-Pro camera. Details are labelled at the bottom of the picture. Taken at Bortle 7 backyard, Southern Ontario.

This is the most distance object anyone can see by naked eyes without any aid. With a distance of 2.5 light years away from us, this barred spirial galaxy has a diameter of about 220,000 light years across. Based on Doppler shifting of its light, Andromeda is moving toward us at 130 kilometers per second. Some days (some 3.7 billion years later), it may merge with our own local galaxy and that will be a very interesting show in the sky at night and in day time.
