Description

This is a panorama of Kitt Peak National Observatory. It is a program of the NOIRLab. Located at at the end of route 386 on the Tohono O’odham Nation, 56 miles west of Tucson. AZ, USA. KPNO sits at 7,000 feet (22,133 meters) above sea level in the Quinlan Mountains. Its English name from Phillippa (Roskruge) Kitt, the sister of a 19th centruy surveyor. The Tahomo O’odham call it “lolkam Du’ag” meaning mountain of Manzanita shrubs, “or “I”itoi”s (creator) garden.” It was stablished in 1958 by the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is a home of more than two dozen telescopes for professional research, as well as visitor center for the public.The observatory is famous for hosting the first telescope (an old 91 cm reflector telescope) used to search for near-Earth asteroids, and impact with Planet Earth.
